The Watchman of the River

In a broken world, some men choose to stand watch. Even when the monsters come calling.

By SHDAgentScarecrow/34 chapters/436 pages

Cee Kay, the Watchman, armed on a dock along the Indian River, mist and a launch tower behind him.

01 — The long watch

They refuse the Village. They refuse to let it fall.

In the ruins of Florida’s Space Coast, a hardened Navy veteran and his wife operate from the shadows — silent guardians of a fledgling community they will not join.

Cee Kay, the Watchman, and his Valkyrie Katie use military precision, psychological warfare, and ruthless efficiency to keep the Village alive. They deliver supplies, intelligence, and brutal justice while staying hidden.

But the shadows are getting crowded.

Cocoa Village struggles on under former SEAL Clay Spencer. Raiders known as the Horde prowl the ruins. Fanatics preach that the Chimera virus and the nuclear strikes were divine judgment. As the settlement grows and old ghosts come back, the Watchman and his Valkyrie have to decide whether to remain hidden protectors… or finally step into the light.

From the prologue

02 — Who holds the line

Heroes in the dark. Villains in the open.

The watch

  • Cee Kay on a river dock in camouflage, rifle across his chest, a ruined shack and a launch tower in the mist behind him.

    The Watchman

    Cee Kay

A hardened Navy veteran who kept the night shift at a naval support facility until the monitors went dark. From a boarded house on the Indian River he moves supplies, intelligence, and hard justice — and still refuses to join the community he protects.

  • Katie, the Valkyrie, blonde hair and a black plate carrier, standing in floodwater among ruined buildings.

    The Valkyrie

    Katie

His wife, K.D. in the old life and the Valkyrie in the new one. She knows the same security world he does. Together they stay hidden, efficient, and unwilling to let Cocoa Village die in the dark.

  • Morgan, called Freya, red hair damp, camouflage plate carrier, ruined buildings and palms behind her.

    Freya

    Morgan

Called Freya when the rifles come out. Morgan stands with the watch when two people are no longer enough to hold the river.

  • Portrait of Clay Spencer at dusk beside a sandbagged timber gate, close-cropped hair, worn olive shirt.

    The gate

    Clay Spencer

A former SEAL leading Cocoa Village in the open. Where the Watchman works from the shadows, Clay holds the gate, counts the living, and tries to grow a town that can outlast the ruins.

What comes calling

  • Portrait of a Horde raider at night, sunburned, ragged jacket, a rifle held low against headlight haze.

    Raiders

    The Horde

They do not preach and they do not build. Headlights in the palms, then whatever still works is gone — supplies, weapons, and anyone who waited too long to lock the gate.

  • Portrait of a gaunt preacher in a ruined Florida church, candlelight on a soot-stained collar.

    Judgment

    The cult

Fanatics who read the Chimera virus and the nuclear flashes as divine judgment. Surviving the end is not enough for them. They mean to explain it, and then enforce the explanation.

03 — The coast

A map you keep in your head.

  • Dusk over a damaged Cocoa Village street, sandbags and a timber gate between palm trees.

    The settlement

    Cocoa Village

A growing pocket of the living under Clay Spencer. They need food, medicine, and someone mean enough to keep the road clear — whether or not that someone will take a house inside the wire.

  • A rusted launch gantry at Cape Canaveral standing in salt grass beside the Atlantic.

    The prize

    The Cape

Cape Canaveral and what is left of the naval coast. Gantry, armor, fuel, and memory. Anyone who can reach it thinks they just found the future. Most of them are wrong.

  • A ragged convoy of trucks moving through a ruined Florida strip at night.

    The pressure

    The Horde

Raiders in the ruins. They do not preach and they do not build. They arrive with headlights and leave with whatever still works, including people who waited too long to lock the gate.

  • The weapon

    Chimera

An engineered respiratory strain, loosed through the ports and then loosed from its makers. Hospitals folded. Shelves emptied. Then the missiles followed.

  • The sermon

    The cult

Fanatics who read the virus and the nuclear flashes as divine judgment. They are not content to survive the end. They want to explain it, and then enforce the explanation.

  • The net

    ODIN

The Operational Defense Intelligence Network — the Watchman’s habit of listening made into a system. Radios, rumors, and the difference between a warning and a funeral.

  • The post

    The river house

A modest ranch south of the Village, still scarred from Hurricane Milton. Pantry, generator, armor from the Cape, and a slit in the plywood. This is where the watch is kept.
